Matthew M. McCluer is Special Counsel in the New Orleans office of Leake Andersson. Matt’s primary areas of practice include labor and employment, professional liability, insurance coverage and defense, and complex commercial matters. He has extensive experience representing management across numerous industries in litigation, advising on employment and compliance issues, drafting company policies and employment agreements, conducting internal investigations, and preparing corporate responses to administrative charges and audits by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, National Labor Relations Board, and other federal and state agencies. He also has a background in civil litigation ranging from personal injury and premises liability to expropriation and land use.

Matt graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in Political Science and obtained his juris doctor from Mississippi College School of Law, near his hometown of Madison, Mississippi. While in law school, Matt was an editor of the Law Review and a member of two moot court teams that participated in national appellate competitions and received awards for brief writing and oral advocacy. Following graduation, Matt moved to New Orleans and began his legal career focusing on professional liability and insurance defense. Prior to joining Leake, he worked for a national boutique firm specializing in labor and employment litigation and corporate compliance and a local defense firm handling a diverse range of commercial and civil litigation.

Matt is licensed to practice in all state and federal courts in Louisiana, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a former chair of the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Labor Relations and Employment Law Section, and a member of the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, and Defense Research Institute.

Personal

Matt is active in the homebrewing community and competes in BJCP competitions around New Orleans in his spare time and also has a passion for the history and evolution of classic cocktails. Matt lives in Gretna with his wife Megan, their two children, and a pair of rowdy Australian Shepherds.
